Big Heart for Kerry Shaw, and her loving portrait session for Child Development Institute
In a matter of of few sessions big heart photographer Kerry Shaw entirely transformed the lives of about ten victimized families who had suffered domestic violence. Kerry worked with these families to document the positive transformation they had experienced after they completed a twelve week program that freed them from their past abusive families and left them with a lasting loving impression of their new and very real happy family.
Not an easy task considering what these families endured.
As Kate Heron, the producer of the CDI's project describes; "I could not have done it without Kerry. Getting happy moments takes something different with each family. Kerry was instantly able to respond to her subjects and change her approach. She was bossy when she needed to be bossy. Kind when she needed to be kind. Expertly shifted from shameless clown, to firm-but-fair setter of boundaries, into the best camp counsellor you've ever had - and back again - and got magic, pure magic, in 20 minutes or less. Simply put, she does what it takes to get her shot. Period. But what really bowled me over was watching her edit the sessions with our Mums. She had them laughing, joking... believing they were beautiful. She was able to take a mum who was convinced that she needed a Perfect Sears Portrait - and make them change their minds, and see that the goofy shot of their son, leaping in the air with a silly grin, blurred and candid - she made them see how that was who their kids really were. And made them see these honest, authentic moments, for the priceless evidence they really are. Priceless evidence of kids who aren't right now, but are going to someday, be happy again."
